Confronting the ultimate evil, how far would you go to survive?
What Opa Did follows Kate, a young New Yorker, as she confronts her Jewish grandparents’ past in Germany, where they were forced to hide with their baby during the war.
As Kate uncovers the truth about her Opa leaving the family to fend for themselves for three years and the choices that he and her Oma had to make to survive, she grapples with the moral complexities of their actions and the impact of secrets on their identities. The cast includes Meghan Lewis, Victor Montez, Lilli Passero, Jeremy Schaye, and Allan Wasserman. Christopher Franciosa is the playwright. He is the son of Rita Thiel, a Holocaust survivor, and the late film and tv star Tony Franciosa. The experiences of his mother and grandparents inspired Christopher to write What Opa Did. His other plays include Lions to Ride, J Date, and A Blessing: The Miracle of Edith Stein, He is a graduate of UCLA. Also an actor, he recently appeared as the wealthy widower in Theatre Forty’s hit production of Becky’s New Car. James Paradise directs What Opa Did. His other stage directing credits include The Last Romance (at Theatre 40), Closer, The Dreamer Examines His Pillow, Rank and File, Vikings, Day Game, and more. Also an actor, he is a graduate of Boston University. What Opa Did is not just a historical drama. It is a profound exploration of how the past continues to resonate in our lives today. The play challenges audiences to reflect on their own identities, the legacies they inherit, and the secrets they keep.
