From shimmering seas to Scottish Highlands—Benedetti and Emelyanychev combine for an all-Mendelssohn program.
Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti has been praised by The New York Times as “a violinist of uncommon expressive depth.” Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, featuring melodic invention and captivating lyricism, has become one of the celebrated Grammy-winning performer’s specialties. Benedetti is joined by her frequent collaborator and Principal Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra for an all-Mendelssohn program.
Building on the Scottish theme, Emelyanychev leads the orchestra in the Third Symphony, a work shaped by Mendelssohn’s travels through the rugged landscapes and ancient ruins of Scotland. Dark and windswept, the symphony unfolds as a continuous arc from brooding mystery to blazing triumph. Inspired by Goethe, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage opens the evening in a suspended stillness. The orchestra hovers in glassy quiet before surging forward with buoyant motion that conjures an entire world of in just a few minutes of sound.
