Danish String Quartet, Danish National Girls' Choir, Charlotte Rowan, conductor
Join the Danish String Quartet and the Danish National Girls’ Choir for an extraordinary evening of music that transcends genres and generations.
Featuring a stunning new work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang, this collaboration between two of Denmark’s most celebrated ensembles promises to be a powerful celebration of artistry and innovation.
A note from the Danish String Quartet: "We have curated a bespoke program that is harnessing the powers of a string quartet and girls’ choir. The first piece will be Caroline Shaw’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Allemande—in a new arrangement for girls’ choir. From here, the concert will be a journey through the music and stories of powerful women characters and composers throughout history. We will meet an early Danish power lady, Queen Dagmar from the 12th century, we will hear the cracking voice of Marie Tang Kristensen, a Danish housewife, whose songs were captured on wax cylinders back in 1907. We will also hear the voices of composers such as Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Lotta Wennäkoski and Danish electronic musician Astrid Sonne interspersed with traditional songs and tunes that surrounded us when we grew up in Denmark.
The second half of the concert will consist of the premiere of David Lang’s new piece from girls’ choir and string quartet, in wildness."
*in wildness was commissioned by Danish National Girls’ Choir (DR Pigekoret), Arts & Lectures at University of California Santa Barbara, Carnegie Hall, La Jolla Music Society, Philharmonic Society of Orange County, Stanford Live, and Washington Performing Arts Society.
