CLEVELAND, OH — Piano Cleveland has announced details for the 2027 Cleveland International Piano Competition (CIPC), widely recognized as one of the leading classical piano competitions in the world. Taking place in Cleveland during summer 2027 with preliminary rounds beginning earlier in the year, the competition seeks out future leaders of the piano world with a format designed not only to identify exceptional performers, but also support them as artistic leaders in their field. As the host organization for the competition, Piano Cleveland is currently accepting applications for pianists ages 18–32 until December 4, 2026.
The competition will culminate in Cleveland from July 25–August 8, 2027, featuring performances across the city and a Final Concerto Round with the world-renowned Cleveland Orchestra.

“Competitions can sometimes focus solely on technical achievement,” said Yaron Kohlberg, Artistic Director of Piano Cleveland. “The Cleveland International Piano Competition is different. We want to understand who these artists are—their ideas, their creativity, and their vision for the future of classical music. Our format gives them the space to express themselves as complete artists.”

About Piano Cleveland

Piano Cleveland promotes Cleveland as a premier piano destination by presenting world-class programming, community engagement, and education initiatives. The organization’s four major programs and events include the Cleveland International Piano Competition, the CIPC for Young Artists, a mixed-genre piano festival, and year-round education and community engagement programming.

About the 2024 Competition:

"If one was to set out to hold a musical competition they should come to Cleveland to find the blueprint. The Cleveland International Piano Competition over it's 50 years has come close to perfection in producing such an event. To start they are blessed with many amazing venues to chose from for such an activity. The Opening Ceremony was held at the iconic Hanna Theatre on Playhouse Square. Pop songs played on two Steinways as the contestants paired up to compete for the $5000 audience prize. Songs by the likes of Queen, ABBA, Bon Jovi, Guns N' Roses, etc. were masterfully arranged by concert pianist Alexey Kurbatov. Never heard of anything like this at a classical music competition. Others take note - it was a winner!

The Quarter and Semi-final Rounds are held in the Reinberger Chamber Hall at Severance Music Center. A majestic and intimate venue for the amazing pianists from all over the world to compete. We sat there and heard all 16 quarter finalists (age range for the competition is 18 to 32). They are among the best in the world!  I would hate to have been a judge as it was hard to decide who should take home the top prizes. In talking with the judges and producers, the competition has refined it's judging process over the years to make the selection process as fair as possible with consideration to the jurists individual deliberations. No group discussion of the contestants.

The Final Salon Round is held in the beautiful Magnolia Room at nearby historic Glidden House. The Final Concerto Round with the full Cleveland Orchestra will be held in its home, the Mandel Concert Hall at Severance Music Center. With its stunning aluminum leaf ceiling, in our opinion is one of the most beautiful concert halls in the world! To top it off, after the $75,000 first place prize-winner is selected, the following day will be the Bravo Piano Gala in the gigantic atrium of the world famous Cleveland Museum of Art across the street. Forgot to mention that the practice facilities are at nearby CIM - Cleveland Institute of Music. Really, I don't think it can get any better. All aspects considered, including the format (solo rounds, chamber round, salon round, signature final concerto round), and many free community engagement events, we are not aware of a piano competition that tops this one! In three years they will do it all over again. GO!" - Performing Arts LIVE
