This March American Contemporary Ballet will present George Balanchine's Concerto Barocco and La Source -- the first time the two ballets have been performed together in Los Angeles. Balanchine: Twin Masterpieces is a rare chance for audiences to see how these similarly structured but strikingly different works reveal the vast capabilities of classical ballet and its greatest choreographer.
TWO BALLET MASTERWORKS PERFORMED TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN L.A.
This March, American Contemporary Ballet stages Balanchine: Twin Masterpieces, presenting the choreographer’s acclaimed Concerto Barocco and La Source in a program never before presented in Los Angeles. It is also the first full-length staging of La Source to be seen in Los Angeles in 40 years.
The pairing is rare, and significant. Both ballets are plotless, sublime examples of neoclassical mastery, and strikingly similar in their duration, structure and cast: one male, one female principal, one female soloist and eight corps. But despite their similarities, the deep atmospheres, sumptuous visuals, and personalities evoked in each ballet are worlds apart.
Audiences watching these two works in ACB’s intimate environment – to live music – have a rare opportunity to see up close how much ballet is capable of. “There are those who have
claimed the classical vocabulary is limiting,” says ACB Director Lincoln Jones. “Here, we see it is the opposite: a tool of infinite creation and timeless beauty.”
Performed to Bach’s exquisite 1731 Double Violin Concerto, Concerto Barocco is “as near perfection as ballet can be” [Alastair Macaulay]. La Source is a sparkling ballet to the music of Léo Delibes, one of the few composers Balanchine thought could truly write dance music. Tchaikovsky said of Delibes' ballet music, “If I had known this music I would not have written Swan Lake."
The company first staged Concerto Barocco three years ago in one of its most popular performances. Paired with La Source, the program offers a sublime and revelatory experience of the art form.
