A Journey in the Exploration of the Extent and Limits of Hybridisation Strategies in Musical Composition

The talk will focus on musical hybridity and critical methods developed for the hybridisation of electroacoustic music and metal as part of the presenter’s PhD research.

These methods are designed to build a blueprint for hybrid composers (ultimately not only for metal and electroacoustic music, but also for other genres that combine spectromorphological-focused music with harmony- and rhythm-based music, since this type of hybridity requires a unique set of challenges and complexities). The talk shall shed light on this research journey, which began with exploration of two differing concepts of hybridity at opposite ends of the spectrum: Transformational Hybrid, which focuses on transforming the musical materials across different genres, and Polystylistic Hybrid, which approaches hybridity through the coexistence of distinct musical identities. Through this four-year research journey, these approaches led to the development of a novel concept and framework: the Cannibalistic Hybrid, which offers greater control and more complex possibilities for achieving end goals similar to those of the Transformational Hybrid. As technology increases rapidly and postmodern conditions continue to blur boundaries, hybridity has become a prominent musical approach for reflecting on what is considered music and art in the 21st century.
